Bernard for the Lothians List

Voting has now closed for the Lothian List and Bernard has secured 8th place on the Lothian Regional list.

Thanks to everyone who supported him.

My Hustings Speech – 11th January 2016

Thank you Alex for the introduction and thank you all for coming along on a cold January night.

I’d like to tell you a bit about myself and why I’m seeking your vote to top the list of Labour candidates in the Lothians.

I have already sent out an email and you’ve been able to read in the candidates booklet about my Labour Party and Trade Union activism and involvement in my local community.

Tonight, I want to tell you about something else.

More about the type of person I am.

What you’ll get if you make me your choice as number 1 on the Lothians list.

I want to look back to the 1992 General Election.

I lived in North and Leith at the time and we had worked hard to get Malcolm Chisholm elected for the first time.

Anyway, we were happy that we had managed to get Malcolm elected but disappointed, because, nationally we had lost for the fourth time.

As I made my way back home along Great Junction Street in the early hours of the following morning after celebrating Malcolm’s victory, I was stopped by an old man.

Obviously, my disappointment showed because he asked me what was wrong?

So, I told him that I was a Labour Party member, happy that we had won in Leith but disappointed we had been beaten again and it didn’t ever look like we could win a general election again.

He told me that he was a Communist.

He told me that he had been taught to never give up.

To keep fighting for what you believe in.

And he told me that I should do the same.

I don’t think I ever saw him again, even though there were many weekends spent leafleting in the Kirkgate.

But his words have stayed with me.

When I’ve stood on PCS picket lines – and our cause has seemed hopeless,

When we campaigned in Midlothian to keep the public toilets open and won,

And as I stand here before you tonight, when the polls look grim.

The belief that I have in our shared values as a party.

My belief that Labour is the only party that truly cares about social justice.

The only party that can deliver social justice.

That is why I’ll fight for our party.

Our beliefs, our shared values.

That is what you will get if you make me your number 1 choice.
